a day to never return
descends in gray water
the night will drown
written in black ink
because that’s how it will end
without fanfare or encore
for it never struggles
never swims and tomorrow
again will float till it sinks
the moment of death
unseen unmourned
surrendered silence
and with a click I see
the dogs are already in their
evening spots on the sofa
as the yellow lamplight
spreads to the back sliders
and the ebony wall of night
and somewhere beyond that
that gulp in the darkness
I never heard
