on their way to a perch

sparrows always chirp

with a sound I can’t help

but interpret as

“hey, it’s just me”

the kind of welcome I bet

you’d prefer to hear

from any stranger

or a sweet reminder

from someone

you’ve met before

or even an old friend

reassuring you

they haven’t changed

imagine how wonderful

that would sound

to your ears
