I've Never Herded Cats - March 30, 2024

Gary Hunter

though I do lead a group of poets

that purr when reading their poems

will lick anybody’s good lyrics

or hiss at another’s when

that other is not looking

and certainly howl

if their tails get stepped on

my job is getting them back here each week

yelling doesn’t work for mature poets

only cajoling   sometimes with promised treats

sometimes with encouraging words

about their amazing talent or

how much fun we have together

how much I need them

cleverness and humor

can have the same effect as catnip

and when I walk into our meeting

see those tails twisting and mouths

going I know they are hungry and

looking forward to some good poetry

I’ve never been a cat herder

but if I ever become one

I’ll see if any of these tricks

are transferable
