More than Beggars - Feb. 27, 2023

Gary Hunter

do you canine-handicapped

really understand dog-kids?

how pretty or handsome they look

after a bath and clip

and a blue-ribbon poop

on our morning walk

how charming each time a paw

begs for food or petting fingers

and the licks-everything tongue

sloped across our lips

furballs of endless lap love

with tricks and funny habits

always ready to play cuddle

or love-jump us opening the door

these the sons and daughters

we tuck in at night with a kiss

that never turn their muzzles

away in embarrassment

but gladly soak up

all that affection

they’ve already mined

from the tunnels in our hearts
