writing a poem
does not require
rising early to shower
grabbing coffee and a muffin
before a long commute to punch
the time clock of creativity
it certainly doesn’t need
a desk with a blotter
a new-fangled chair
a friendly atmosphere
or even friendlier boss
nor demand 15-minute
state-ordered breaks
overtime pay or free
lunches with colleagues
though one will need a bowl
perhaps a pinch of moon glow
a tablespoon of crossed eyes
sprinkled with luck
to mix the bland words
spread it onto a sheet
and bake till crispy
the best poets
know exactly how long
to time the cook
and serve it
still chewy in the center
