you’re familiar with them

aging mushy if not

slightly shriveled

of course I’m also talking

about you and me

a sweet one will age

agreeably, if not

sweeter as it shrinks

one that is puckering tart

will probably turn more sour

and ugly faced

though it’s possible to rally

over to the lovable side

forgiveness changes chemistry

and in such a short season

of such a short life

don't we all want to linger

like a swallowed sunset?
